10 BLOGGING WRITING TIPS FOR NEWBIES

By pattiallred

Jan 2022

Ok, calling all of you that are just getting started as a blogger. (And if you are wanting to start, I highly suggest that you check out my Blog Post on Getting Started).

Getting started can be extremely frustrating to anyone.  Wondering what you should post, how to post it, how long should the post be, and 50-11 more questions.  I would strongly suggest that you write down your main ideas, first, then fill in with pertinent information that would go along with those ideas as well as help your readers.

There are ways you can improve your blog writing skills that will help you grab the attention and retention of your readers but don’t worry you don’t need to sign up for an expensive class.

With the right resources and blog writing tips, you can do it at home–all by yourself! Whoohoo!

We are not all amazing writers, well at least at first, and it can be really frustrating but do not let that stop you from getting started.  Just do it and learn as you do it.  You will see your progress and so will your readers.  Just make sure you are making them feel like one of your friends that you are trying to help solve a problem.  The rest will eventually fall into place.

RULE #1 DO NOT USE YOUR BLOG POST FOR A SALES PLATFORM ONLY.

Using your blog post as a Sales Only Platform will turn everyone off. No one ever wants to feel like they are being sold something. When they read your blog, they want to see that you are helping them solve a problem with whatever you are offering.

3 Really Good Tips to Follow when you are looking for content to write is:

  • You want to make sure that you are getting to your readers on an emotional level. You are influencing them.
  • Make sure you are teaching people about what you offer: your brand, services, or products.
  • Write it in your own words without taking away the value because you want to talk the way you talk and not someone else to establish your own unique way of writing.

AS I MENTIONED ABOVE YOU WANT TO START BY WRITING AN OUTLINE FOR YOUR BLOG POST.

Please do not think that you are going to open your laptop and just tap away and end up with a good blog post. It is pretty much impossible to do that especially if you have not done some research or have written yourself a game plan down.

You definitely want to impress your readers so just typing out whatever is probably not going to do it. Hince the importance of creating a game plan comes into play.  Creating a headline first can help you control the entire blog posts and every detail about your writing.

Your blog game plan does not need to be detailed and long. You simply need the main purpose of what your posts are about and to take note of the things you are planning to go over. How you want to make your sections and remember to keep everything short and simple. No matter how short your notes are, your game plan can stop you from writing what you intended to write so make sure you have the right thought-out words and metaphors. You can focus on your post’s overall structure. It does not matter whether you are writing yours on a word processor or using a pen or paper. Do what works best for you. Don’t complicate this process by trying to make it hard.  Just do it.

SO HOW DO YOU WRITE A BLUEPRINT / GAMEPLAN FOR YOUR BLOG?

1. START WITH “YOUR MAIN IDEA”!

Each blog post needs to have several points that will help your reader with their problem or help them with what they are looking for.  Each point should all come back to the Main Idea of your whole blog. This means one Main Idea per blog post.  Don’t confuse yourself or your readers by putting more than one main idea in your blog.

2. FIGURE OUT WHAT SOLUTION YOU ARE OFFERING TO YOUR READER.

It boils do to, why are you writing the blog post in the first place.  What people are you trying to help?  What benefits are you giving to them? Do you need to give them links to outside research information? What is the best call-to-action statement for your post? How can you write your story so that the reader realizes that their solution to their problem is right inside of the blog? There are several ways to write your blog.  Find your style and go with it so your people will know your way of offering them help and solutions.

3. LIST YOUR HEADINGS & SUBHEADINGS.

Be sure you put your heading topic and subheading topics so that your reader won’t have to guess what each section is all about.  You will know exactly where you should put what when writing your blog simply by following your blueprint. It will help you know what needs to stay and what needs to go.

THE BEST BLOG WRITING TIPS!

1. THE BEST WAY TO WRITE IS TO KNOW WHAT YOUR READERS WANT.

You simply pay attention to your readers and see what they are looking for. Listen to your readers. Make time to go through their comments every day. Are they suggesting new blog topics? If they are, take note! This is a great way to gather new ideas that your readers would want to read about. By just knowing their thoughts, you can grow your blog solid. Another great place to get ideas on what your audience is wanting is to read comments on other social media accounts.

2. WRITE HEADLINES THAT GRAB YOUR READERS ATTENTION WHERE THEY CAN’T RESIST READING.

One of the biggest tips is for you to make sure that your Headline is a Scroll-Stopper.  Meaning that when your reader is scrolling through, they will come to a screeching halt when they see your headline. Tons of bloggers make the mistake of coming up with poorly written headlines. Do yourself a favor and decide on your headline before you start writing your blog. Without headlines, there are no roadmaps that will lead you in the right direction. Which ends up causing your readers to lose interest and leave.

Headlines are there to grab your reader and pull them in and hold on to them.

3. GRAB YOUR READERS ATTENTION.

This tip is one that is actually used on us all the time.  Think about the many times a headline grabbed your attention and picked up that book, magazine, or clicked on that article. With the right choice of words, you can write solid details that will totally grab the attention of their readers.

4. GET RID OF THE JUNK.

Using unnecessary sayings and other words will just overwhelm readers and lose them. Proofread your work. Do you have junk, weak words? These words are empty terms that bring zero value to your content. Remove these terms, and just stick with powerful words and statements.

5. EASY TO READ AND SKIM OVER IS BEST.

Make sure that you make your blog easy to read and not choppy. Break down blocks of text using subheaders or bullet points. You wouldn’t have a tough time with this, as long as you take your blueprint like you intended to. Some people are so lazy that instead of reading blog posts word for word, they just skim articles. (I may or may not be one of those skimmers, at times, too). Make sure that your paragraphs are not more than 2 to 3 sentences. Clean, clear, and to the point.

6. STUNNING PICTURES ARE KEY.

Yep, this is about writing but we all like to see a beautiful picture every now and then. I know we are talking about blog writing tips here, but the importance of images is still worth mentioning. Use compelling images that visually break up huge blocks of text. This makes the entire content easily skimmable for your readers. Also, by including the best images, you can effectively illustrate the key points you are trying to make. For example, if you want to mention scientific data on your post, it will be better to include a graph or chart visualizing that data.  Get tha picture? Lol

7. DO RESEARCH ON WHAT YOU WANT YOUR BLOG TO BE ABOUT.

So, you already have a list of interesting topics you want to write about? Before starting your draft, research on those topics first. Make sure that they will be relevant to what you are writing. You can also check Google Trends, and figure out what the world is currently talking about. This helps tremendously.

8. DO KEYWORD RESEARCH.

This used to scare me, and I thought how the heck do I even do keyword research.  But Keyword research is an important part of your content creation. Every blog must be optimized well for 1 or 2 powerful keywords. These keywords must be used in the URL, meta description, header tags, title tag, and all throughout your blog post. It’s also okay to use semantically related keywords or those highly related ones. These words are deeply relevant to the main topic and can make a huge positive difference to your content. The most basic platforms you can use here are SEMRush and Google Keyword Planner.

9. OPTIMIZE FOR SEO.

Without proper search engine content optimization, all of your blog writing efforts will be useless. Never underestimate the power of SEO. If you want, you can go for paid SEO, but don’t ever forget about organic searches. Organic searches still make a sizable chunk of traffic for many websites. Below are quick tips that you can follow to maximize your search engine optimization ranking.

  1. Add alt-text to your blog post images.
  1. Focus on writing an engaging meta description and meta title.
  1. Optimize based on your focus keywords.
  1. Put internal links.

10. TAKING A BREAK IS IMPORTANT.

Blogging can be tiring and overwhelming. I’m sure you want that blog writing task to be over soon, so you can share your knowledge with your readers. But it’s crucial not to rush things! Before finishing your draft, take a break, walk away from it for a while. Take time to relax, get some rest or maybe even watch your favorite movie. Taking a step back from the job for a while will help you see errors that you didn’t see while working on it., and then incorporate new creative twists.

11. MAKE SURE YOUR ENDING IS CLEAR.

Provide a definite conclusion, and then combine a clear call-to-action statement. Make sure your readers know what to do after reading your blog. Make it so that they won’t forget you and your blog for a long time. Make them remember you and your unique style. The thoughts you leave them with must linger in their minds for quite a while. Soon, they will consider your platform one that they want to visit often.
